Malta has a long and colorful history dating back to the dawn of civilisation. The islands passed through many different periods including, Neolithic period, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Byzantines. St. Paul was shipwrecked on the island while on his way to Rome in 60 A.D. The island came to be conquered by the Arabs, the Knights of St. John, Napoleon Boneparte and the English. The british rule in Malta lasted until 1964 when Malta became independent. The maltese language has been influenced by many of the conquering countries languages, mostly the Arabic, italian and english. Due to such a diverse history, the islands houses many fortifications and temples.
